The June 2018 issue of S.W.A.T. is currently on newsstands everywhere.
The most common arguments against the shotgun when used for self-defense or law enforcement are that its ammunition capacity is limited and it can be slow to reload. But the times, as they say, are a changin’.
Mossberg has introduced two models of a box-magazine-fed shotgun—the 590M with bead sight, and the 590M Tri-Rail with rifle-type sights. S.W.A.T. tests the Tri-Rail version in the June issue. Since the evaluation, Mossberg has changed the name of the 590M Tri-Rail to the 590M Heat Shield that uses the standard Mossberg cobb-style forend but is otherwise identical to the shotgun used in our comprehensive evaluation.
In COOL ON THE RANGE, DEAD ON THE STREET: A Hard Look at Shooting Techniques, Jeff Gurwitch may be labeled a heretic by some in the tactical community when he argues against two popular tactical shooting techniques. Keep in mind that he formed his opinions after six combat tours with Special Operations.
The June S.W.A.T. Sweepstakes features a Davidson’s Gallery of Guns Special Edition Glock G19 Gen4 with Battleworn Burnt Bronze Cerakote finish on the slide and frame. The Glock 19 Gen4 in 9mm has found worldwide acclaim in both the law enforcement and private sectors. The winner also receives 200 rounds of Super Vel 9mm Luger +P ammunition; an Elzetta Model B142 Modular Flashlight; and a Cuda holster, magazine/flashlight combo pouch, and gun belt from Simply Rugged Holsters.
Starting in the June issue, we have a new semi-regular series called Shoot Like a Girl, which is targeted toward (no pun intended) the increasing number of women shooters. Women are taking up arms for a variety of reasons, including crime prevention and in reaction to being victimized. Read their accounts in the June and future issues.
Other features cover how quickly take-down rifles and shotguns can be assembled to use, two different takes on the 1911, a Krebs AK pistol, and a look at modern .45 ACP loads. All this and more, including S.W.A.T.’s must-read columns.
Now in its 36th year of continuous publication, S.W.A.T. remains the magazine savvy shooters turn to for honest, comprehensive evaluations of firearms, gear, and training. Not just for law enforcement, S.W.A.T. is where the cop on the beat shakes hands with the man on the street.
