RECOIL Magazine Features Dan Wesson DWX, Staccato CS

APPLETON, Wis. – RECOIL Magazine, a publication of CMG West, LLC, has released its latest issue, number 65.

2023 may well go down as the year the 1911 became relevant again. Over the past half-decade, we’ve seen the remarkable growth of Staccato, which has created a wildly successful business selling race guns to cops, but the OG double-stack 1911 has always struggled with a magazine designed around the .45 ACP cartridge. As with Glock’s dogmatic adherence to its polymer mags, this means they’re way bigger than they need to be and, in the case of STI Staccato, have never been particularly reliable without tweaking and tuning. This is about to change with the couple of pistols featured in this issue.

As any firearms engineer will tell you, designing a reliable magazine is the hardest part of designing a reliable handgun. The smartest option is to find one that already works and build the rest of the gun around it. Wilson Combat did this with their excellent EDC9, and now Staccato has introduced a compact carry 1911 based around a dedicated 9mm mag. In a similar fashion, Dan Wesson is about to shake up the competition world with their DWX, which, while not strictly a 1911, has enough 1911 heritage to make JMB fans nod approvingly. Again, they took an already existing magazine — in this case the excellent

P09/10 — and built what could turn out to be the best USPSA base platform of the next decade. What gets proven in competition sells into the CCW and home-defense arena, and we look forward to seeing what comes of this design and the variants it spawns — we just hope the parent company of CZ can capitalize it sufficiently for market success. Elsewhere in this issue, we’ve got a ton of great stories, ranging from the latest in night vision equipment to the best options for backcountry bear defense. I was also fortunate enough to interview some Americans who have been risking their lives in Ukraine — if you’re interested in supporting their efforts, check out ukrainedefensesupport.org and letmehelpua.com.

In this issue we also review the Smith & Wesson M&P12 Bullpup shotgun, take a look at POF’s new lever-action 9mm Tombstone, bring you RECOIL’s inaugural fully suppressed event appropriately named CANCON, speak to Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, interview intelligence legend Billy Waugh, customize a Steyr Aug, examine Griffin Armament’s new Dual-Lok family of Suppressors, and much more.
