“There’s something inherently satisfying about creating a custom handgun,” says American Handgunner Editor Tom McHale. The May/June issue of Handgunner features the GSX100 — a GLOCK Gen 3-compatible frame to start a custom pistol build from GlockStore.com.
For the customized test gun, a Signature Series slide, threaded barrel, Basic Pyramid Trigger, upgraded safety plunger, TRUGLO fiber optic sights and various upgraded, extended and cosmetically enhanced controls were selected. The end result is a soft- shooting, visually striking handgun that delivered 2" five-shot groups with Norma MHP rounds. As McHale suggests, with the GSX100 “the sky’s the limit if you want to create an heirloom gift or something special for yourself.”
In “Playing The Long Game,” Massad Ayoob goes hands-on with a Ruger Mark IV pistol sporting a 10" bull barrel. With an overall length of 14" and weight of 53.5 oz., Ayoob tested accuracy from a range of ammo, but found the most impressive results from CCI’s high velocity Mini-Mag. A five-shot group at 25 yards delivered 35/100ths of 1" center to center. “This told me everything I needed to know about the pistol’s inherent accuracy,” he notes.
A stunning Turnbull Ruger Mark IV Target 10" is the star attraction of the May/June Handgun of the Month giveaway. Chambered in .22 LR, the 10" barrel features Turnbull’s signature color case-hardened bone charcoal method, has 10+1 capacity and arrives in a hard case with two 10-round magazines. Valued at $825, readers are encouraged to enter the free drawing at AmericanHandgunner.com/giveaways.
Additional highlights in the May/June issue include ways to banish (and prevent) scratches on guns with helpful tips and tricks of the trade from Greg Derr in the Pistolsmithing column. Embattled in a holster-storage war? In the Carry Options installment, David Freeman argues the necessity for an assortment of holsters to choose from depending on method of carry, attire, purpose and, of course, the actual gun. And among the many letters to choose from, The Insider pays homage to the “hidden in plain sight” jewel of the revolver world, the loved by many J-Frame.
