Cimarron American No. 3 Shines In June GUNS

“In 1870, S&W introduced the No. 3 in .44 American and presto, Western history was destined to be changed,” lends FMG Publications’ Roy Huntington. In the June issue of GUNS Magazine, Huntington spotlights the historically accurate, impeccably crafted No. 3 American in .45 Colt from Cimarron Firearms.

In collaboration with Uberti, Cimarron replicated the test gun as closely as possible to a first generation No. 3, with the cylinder lengthened to handle the longer .45 Colt round. Details include an 8" barrel, period-correct color case-hardening on the hammer, top latch and trigger guard, original-style grip frame and accurate two-piece walnut grip and a deep, rich blued finish. Roy concludes, “Shooting something like the No. 3 is the whole thing, isn’t it? To hold it, cock it and touch it off is to relive a past still very much alive in our history, legends and just plain wishful thinking. … It all grabs at the heart. If you don’t feel it, I’m sorry for you.”

In a nod to the .300 Savage’s 100th birthday last fall, Wayne Van Zwoll celebrated by taking a bull elk at 120 yards in one shot with Remington’s Express Core-Lokt 180-grain round nose ammo. He shares the origin, history and characteristics of the “somewhat forgotten” member of the .300 tribe in “The .300 Savage — Why Not Choose Our First .300?”

Offering one lucky winner the first step into pre-charged pneumatic shooting, an Umarex Origin .22 tops the June Firearms Giveaway Package. Its pre-pressurized tank requires just 13 pumps of the included 4,500-PSI hand pump to send a round at full power. Features include a combination Picatinny and dovetail optics-mounting rail and a two-stage adjustable trigger. The winner will also receive an Aexon 4-16x44 EDR scope and Razel GT knife from CRKT. Valued at more than $600, readers are encouraged to enter the free drawing online at GUNSMagazine.com/giveaways.

Additional highlights of the June issue include why Massad Ayoob believes the 10mm is too good a cartridge to be kept down in the Handguns column. In the Rifles installment, Dave Anderson argues “sometime extreme” can be good — as is the case with the light, flat-shooting, hard-hitting .257 Weatherby round. Will Dabbs, MD reveals how the L2A3 Sterling submachine gun took on the starring role in the bloody battle for Goose Green in June’s Surplus & Classic column. And finally, when a collective gasp is heard ’round, it’s likely owed to Editor Brent T. Wheat’s shocking confession in GUNS Insider’s “False Pretenses: He’s Not What He Seems.”
