Richard Reichert, 68, of Vienna, Illinois, was the recipient of the special 4-Gun rifle aggregate award at the 2022 Talladega D-Day Matches. The event was held June 8-12 at the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama. Reichert’s outstanding performances in the Garand, Vintage Military, Modern Military and Springfield Matches earned him the 3-Gun rifle aggregate honor and the overall win in the 4-Gun category, where he received a new stock donated by Dupage Trading Company. Reichert also set a new Springfield D-Day Match record, firing an excellent score of 285-7X.
Additional donations to match winners were given by the Garand Collectors Association, which presented CMP Gift Certificates to the overall leading competitor of the Garand Match and the second place finishers in the Vintage Sniper Semi-Auto category.
Talladega’s D-Day event commemorates the anniversary of the 1944 Allied Forces landing at France’s Normandy Beach, paying tribute to the valiant heroes of the World War II generation through a variety marksmanship competitions and activities scattered throughout the 500 acres of Talladega Marksmanship Park. Such matches held during the week included classic service rifle and vintage rifle competitions mixed with challenging pistol opportunities. Modern matches, such as the Garand Iron Man EIC introduced at last year’s D-Day, returned to the event for guests to enjoy in 2022.
Leading the Service M1 Garand category of the new Iron Man match was Scott Godwin, 47, of Auburn, Alabama, with a score of 471-7X, as Steven Dekich, 64, also of Auburn, fired a score of 441-4X to claim the win in the As-Issued M1 Garand category.
Andrew Granberry, 59, of Germantown, Tennessee, broke his own D-Day Match record he had set last year within the As-Issued 1911 Pistol Match Course – crushing his previous score of 349-9X by nearly 20 points. He went on to set another new match record in the Military & Police Pistol Match by just one point, accumulating a score of 360-8X overall.
Granberry overtook the record from Kyle Kirschenmann, 58, of Tellico Plains, Tennessee, who made up for losing one record by setting another in the Roosevelt Commemorative rifle match with a score of 287-5X. It was only three points above the previous record, which Kirschenmann set himself at last year’s D-Day event.
Also claiming a new match record was team Watson Squared, James and Curt Watson, who earned a score of 393-15X in the Vintage Sniper Manual Match. The pair narrowly surpassed the previous record of 393-12X – besting the score by x-count.
