GENESEO, ILL. – Springfield Armory® is proud to announce that its Kuna™ 9mm pistol — designed to deliver exceptional performance in a portable package — has won the esteemed Guns & Ammo 2025 Handgun of the Year Award.
The selection process for earning the prestigious award from such a storied publication is quite demanding. Picked by a team of Guns & Ammo editors, contributors and staff, the Kuna faced extensive testing and evaluation to make the cut as a finalist.
"The Springfield Armory Kuna is a forward-thinking pistol that championed every qualifier in earning the 2025 Guns & Ammo Handgun of the Year award,” said Eric Poole, Editor-in-Chief of Guns & Ammo. “The ground-up design possesses innovative features, demonstrated perfect reliability and superior accuracy, and offers an exceptional value. For these reasons, it is highly recommended by Guns & Ammo’s editorial staff.”
Developed in partnership with HS Produkt, the roller-delayed Kuna is a precision-manufactured PDW designed for optimal fit and function. The pistol is offered in two versions. One features an integrated Picatinny rail on the end plate, while the other variant features a Strike Industries FSA brace fitted out on the Picatinny rail end plate.
The distinctively engineered pistol is named after the European Pine Marten, known in Croatia as the Kuna. A formidable hunter, the Kuna holds the distinction of being the country’s national animal as well as lending its name to some of the nation’s top military units.
At the heart of the fully ambidextrous Kuna lies a roller-delayed operating system, the pinnacle of durability and reliability. Employing a roller to temporarily lock the bolt into battery, the Kuna eliminates the need for a heavy bolt or gas system. Within the rugged monolithic aluminum upper (with integral M-Lok slots) is a cold radial hammer 6” barrel. Finished in Melonite™, the barrel’s muzzle is 1/2×28 threaded and topped off with a multi-port brake.
In addition, the Kuna features unique adjustable hybrid flip-up metal sights. They offer users either a precision aperture rear/ring post front sighting system when flipped up, or a pistol-style white dot front sight/U-notch rear unit when folded down.
“The Kuna’s combination of innovative design and exceptional performance quickly set it apart on the market,” says Steve Kramer, Vice President of Marketing for Springfield. “For it to receive the recognition of this esteemed award from such a respected name in the firearms media community means a great deal to us.”
