Big-bore revolvers aren't for the faint of heart. They're heavy, loud, and chambered for cartridges that mean business. But for handgun hunters who want serious power, mechanical reliability, and the challenge of making a precise shot with a wheelgun, few firearms deliver the same satisfaction.
For Ballistic's Best Hunting Edition 2026, Athlon Untamed assembled three serious hunting revolvers and put them in the hands of five experienced handgun hunters to see how they performed where it counts: on the range, under recoil, and across a series of practical shooting evaluations.
This year's lineup featured the Taurus Raging Hunter in .460 Mag, Smith & Wesson Performance Center 460 XVR also in .460 Mag, and Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull. With .45-caliber bullets, substantial muzzle energy, and very different approaches to hunting handgun design, these revolvers represented three distinct ways to tackle big-game handgun hunting.
The evaluation went beyond punching holes in paper. Each revolver was scored across nine categories: aesthetics, ergonomics, sights, trigger, recoil, reloading, accuracy, reliability, and value. Five shooters brought different preferences and hunting experience to the test, helping ensure the results reflected more than one person's idea of the perfect hunting revolver.
And the competition was tight. All three guns brought legitimate strengths to the table, but differences in handling, recoil management, trigger quality, and overall practicality separated the contenders.
Ballistic's Best Hunting Edition 2026 puts these big-bore wheelguns under the microscope to help hunters understand what each brings to the field, and which characteristics matter most when choosing a handgun for the hunt. Because when you're carrying a revolver chambered to take serious game, brute force is only part of the equation. The real test is putting that power exactly where it belongs.
