For Ballistic's Best 2026: Hunting Edition, seven 20-gauge turkey shotguns went head-to-head in a test designed to find out exactly which guns deserve a place in the spring woods.

The 20-gauge has always been a favorite for hunters who spend more time walking than sitting. Lighter and easier to carry than a 12-gauge, today's 20s also benefit from the rise of Tungsten Super Shot (TSS), giving hunters dense patterns and serious downrange performance without hauling a heavier gun through the timber.

This year's field covers a hell of a lot of ground; from an approximately $300 single-shot to a $2,400 semi-auto and everything inbetween. The lineup includes Weatherby, Benelli, TriStar, Retay, Spandau, Mossberg and Thompson/Center, representing everything from traditional break-actions to modern inertia- and gas-operated platforms.

The testing team evaluated each shotgun across nine categories: aesthetics, ergonomics, sights, trigger, recoil, accuracy, reliability, value/price point, and weight/balance. Turkey loads were patterned at 40 yards, while each gun also saw extensive handling and reliability work, including roughly 175–200 rounds of target ammunition across the seven-shotgun field.

The testing wasn't just about counting pellets on paper. Shooters spent time in realistic ready positions, working safeties, evaluating stocks and controls, and then taking the guns to the skeet range to see how they handled when things started moving. Because turkey hunting isn't a benchrest competition. You may spend hours sitting motionless in the woods for one opportunity. When that gobbler finally steps into range, the shotgun needs to be ready, and so do you.
