Rangemaster June 2026 Drill of the Month: Armada Standards

This is Rangemaster’s “Drill of the Month” – a piece that has become a part of our feature rotation. It is part of that company’s monthly newsletter. As always, start slow before trying to progress. If you’re not familiar with use of the holster – especially from concealment – and, not familiar with the most dangerous thing you’ll do at the range, putting the gun into the holster – seek education first. You can shoot the whole thing from low ready, just to see how you do. The Rangemaster instructors travel. Check the website.

From the Rangemaster newsletter:

DRILL OF THE MONTH

Throughout 2026 we will be running a Drill of the Month in each edition of the newsletter. The goal is to help motivate folks to get to the range and actually shoot their defensive weapons, and to have some fun in the process. Each month we’ll post a drill or a short course of fire. You are encouraged to go to the range, shoot the drill, and then post your thoughts and a photo of your target on the Rangemaster Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/rangemaster/.

ARMADA STANDARDS

My (Tom Givens) personal vehicle is a Nissan Armada, which is 18 feet long. This entire drill is to be shot at 18 feet (6 yards), the length of my vehicle. This is an incredibly common engagement distance in real life defensive shootings.

The target to be used is the B8, B8-C or FBI-IP1. Score it as printed, except that anything further out than the 7 ring counts for zero points.

Use hit factor scoring - record the time for each string. Add the total points and divide by total elapsed time to get the score.

Strings of fire:

  1. Draw and fire 6 rounds, use two hands to shoot.
  2. Start at low ready, with the gun in your dominant hand. Shoot, using the dominant hand only, 4 rounds.
  3. Start at low ready, with the gun in your non-dominant hand. With the non-dominant hand only, fire 4 rounds.
  4. Start with 4 rounds in the gun, holstered. On the signal draw and fire 4 rounds to slide lock, reload immediately, and fire 2 more rounds, using both hands.

The drill consumes 20 rounds total for a score of 200 points possible on the target. Par score (points divided by time) is 8. Your goal is a score higher than 8, the higher the better.
