Survivor’s Edge July/August 2019 Issue

(Nashville, Tenn.)

What’s in store for the July/August 2019 issue of Survivor’s Edge magazine? The focus starts with the ocean and all of the dangers lurking beneath the surface. Do you know how to survive on a deserted island? We’ll give you a leg up with sage advice and helpful stories to help you stay alive after a shipwreck and thrive like Gilligan (coconut radio optional).

Back on land, you might wonder, “What’s the best survival bug-out vehicle?” Find out in our “Rides” column. How can a first responder stay organized and focused on immediate priorities during a disaster? Learn how in Dr. Alton’s story on triaging victims. You might consider the concept of ham radio operators a little old fashioned, but you’d be wrong. Their technology is state of the art, and when the grid goes down, it’ll be up to these operators to keep the country informed. We show you how you can be a part of it.

We also went above and beyond this issue by including an in-depth interview with the survival world’s latest rising star—Melissa Miller—who rocketed into the limelight after multiple appearances on the Discovery Channel’s immensely popularNaked and Afraid. In the interview, writer Michael D’Angona delves into Miller’s life, discussing everything from her aversion to dolls and tea parties as a child to her affinity for the outdoors. She shares worldly advice about the survival mentality and details her daily carry gear. “There is always a knife,” she says in the interview. “Usually multiple knives in close range on my body.”

Miller has parlayed her lifetime of experience and encyclopedic knowledge of the outdoors into a wide range of opportunities, from reviewing survival gear on her Instagram account to teaching wilderness survival, foraging and plant identification at a Michigan nature preserve.

We also take a closer look at Case’s Astronaut Knife M-1, which commemorates the Apollo moon landing, Garmin’s Tactix Charlie GPS watch, Tim Ralston’s unique Scavenger 6 gun (with 21 interchangeable calibers), and a completely waterproof duffle bag from Alps Outdoorz. But that’s not all. There are more that 30 cutting-edge products introduced in our gear guides.

There’s plenty more in store, including “The End,” where we discuss what happens when survival becomes impossible. This issue’s spotlight is on poisoning, which claims one life every 15 seconds. Chilling stuff!
