March Shooting Industry: Long-Range Shooting

“The long-range trend is moving into real science. Shooters are looking at parallax and focal plane — they’re getting into the science of optics,” lends Doug Gifford, director of operations at Core Rifle Systems and GTO Guns & Sporting Goods in Ocala, Fla.

Dealers around the country roundly report interest in long-range shooting has ignited over the past 12-plus months, and the March issue of Shooting Industry “zeroes in” on this burgeoning profit center. Vikram Mookerajee, store manager of Pinnacle Firearms in Carmel, Ind., contends the introduction of the Ruger Precision Rifle several years ago really “opened up the market” to a broader spectrum of customers: “People are always interested in military-style guns snipers and designated marksmen are using,” he said.

In “A Proactive Approach To E-Commerce,” Ashley McGee addresses five common challenges, and solutions to overcome them when considering the addition of online sales to a store’s brick-and-mortar offerings. Selecting the right technology and product mix — as well as finding ways to connect with customers — are important factors to consider. Jim Rauscher, president of Joe’s Sporting Goods in St. Paul, Minn., advises, “What sells best in-store isn’t necessarily what sells best online, and it’s just something you will learn over time.”

SI’s newest column, Everyday Marketing, debuts in March with “4 Words On Maximizing Word Of Mouth.” This timeless method of consumer marketing still reigns supreme and can easily be used to your store’s advantage. Readers of this issue will also get insights on expanding long-gun sales, the value of supplementing income with training, tips for working with women’s shooting organizations and the launch of NSSF’s powerful +ONE movement. And discover how, in a competitive firearms market, increased knife sales can give a store a “Bottom Line Boost!”
