Editorial Background about this incredibly prestigious pistol match:

The National Trophy Individual (NTI) Pistol Match began in 1904, the second year of the National Matches, and is considered to be the most prestigious pistol event at the Camp Perry National Championships. The Course of Fire is fired outdoors in the standing unsupported offhand (one hand) position with the U.S. Service Pistol in either 9mm (Beretta military M9/M9A1) or .45ACP 1911 (other certain approved pistols meeting the detailed and involved rules
may be allowed - all guns are carefully inspected at and even during the matches).

The pistol may be an accurized National Match (quality) pistol but no "race- gun type" pistols are allowed. Pistols must have open sights only, a minimum 4-pound trigger, and no external modifications (there are many other, more detailed rules as well). Ammunition must be round nose, full metal jacket "as issued military type" hardball.

The NTI Match consists of only 30 shots (300 possible points) with 30 Xs possible

The difficult pressure packed course of fire is made up of:
Ten shots slow fire in ten minutes at 50 yards
Two series of five shots in 20 seconds per series at 25 yards
Two series of five shots in 10 seconds per series at 25 yards
The target is tough, with the bullseye consisting of:
1.35-inch X-ring;
3.35-inch 10-ring;
6.35-inch 9-ring
Think about this, he hit that small X ring at 50 and 25 yards with 50 percent of his shots fired offhand!

There are lessor value rings than the 9 ring but a single shot into these and you are probably out of the top gun running.
