America’s Trench Warrior in GUNS Surplus Special Edition

Far from home and embroiled in trench warfare, Americans who served in the First World War discovered the Springfield M1903 rifle was a “world-beater” and “war-winner.” Its many guises are heralded in the 2019 Special Edition issue of GUNS Surplus Vintage & Classic Firearms, Vol. 83 — boasting a collection of 28 articles.

The “United States Rifle, Caliber .30-06, Model 1903” (ultimately, the M1903) was a proficient warfighter, and a terrific platform for inventive accessories and adaptations. A telescopic sight, or Maxim Silencer, made it a capable sniper rifle, and a V-B grenade launcher furthered its utility. Although it never made it on the battlefield, perhaps the greatest example of the M1903’s adaptability was the development of the so-called 20-round “Trench Magazines” that increased its capacity to 25 rounds.

“The M1903 proved to be a highly capable rifle during the Great War, providing American troops with a powerful and reliable weapon to accompany them in the brutal fight,” notes Contributing Editor Tom Laemlein. “[It provides] us with a fascinating insight into the innovative minds of the time.”

From the standpoint of appearance and function, the Cold War-era Czech vz.52 pistol is quite unique. The short recoil-operated, semi-auto handgun uses rollers for lock-up of the barrel and slide during firing. And its unusually broad grip and long tapering triggerguard and muzzle give it a profoundly retro 1950s science fiction look. Chambered for 7.62x25mm, Frank Jardim shares the big, brawny pistol’s tale in “Roller-Locked Radical.”

A trio of replica military surplus arms from Chiappa is up for grabs in this Special Edition’s Gun Giveaway. Inspired by the American classic, the 1911-22 pistol has all the charm and appeal of the original 1911, and is chambered in .22 LR for easy shooting. Modeled after the USGI M1 Carbine, the M1-22 Carbine has a synthetic stock and forend, 18-inch barrel and is chambered in .22 LR. The M1-9, chambered in 9mm, has a wooden stock and forend and 19-inch barrel. Combined, the Chiappa collection of firearms is valued at $1,257. Surplus also highlights one of our country’s most driven foes, the legendary Moro warriors of the Philippines, and their impressive weaponry, armor and fortitude. Interested in adding a bazooka or rocket launcher to your collection but not sure it’s legal? “Heavy Metal” helps set the record straight. In “Tool-Steel Tough,” learn how Century Arms’ U.S.-made VSKA AKM offers AK fans an affordable, reliable, accurate (and fun) variant of the renowned Kalashnikov platform. If DIY piques your interest, “Back To The Future” outlines how to take the best of the Vietnam-issue M16A1 and make it even better with an at-home AR build.
